Equinox Summit: Learning 2030 — A YTEUBC Event: March 3

It has never been more important to invest in the next generation and their capacity to tackle the increasingly complex challenges in the decades to come. Children born in 2013 year will—if all goes well—graduate from high school in the year 2030. But with what kind of skills? Global reports indicate a persistent and complex shortfall in education: high school is the phase of education when students report the least engagement in learning and question the relevance of what they are learning. For this very reason, the Equinox Summit series presented by Waterloo Global Science Initiative (WGSI) is centred on learning, specifically high school.
This exciting event, for UBC faculty, UBC teacher candidates, wider UBC Education community, and Vancouver-area educators, will consist of a workshop (1:00–4:00 pm in Scarfe 206) followed by a panel presentation (4:00–5:30 pm in Scarfe 209).

Local educators and administrators (including 3 metro superintendents) and 3 faculty members: John Yamamoto, [TBA] and [TBA] will meet with the Equinox Summit Learning 2030 team to workshop the Learning 2030 Blueprint—from sharing stories of best practices in BC to criticisms to setting out the strategies needed to promote widespread change in education.

Panelists: Erin Millar (journalist, Summit observer), Eric Kennedy (PhD candidate, Summit participant), Greg Butler (former teacher & principal, formerly of Microsoft Education founder Collaborative Impact) and Dr. Sandra Scott (to provide an ‘outside’ perspective and connection to the goals of UBC’s Faculty of Education).
